Baby's first Christmas... I should have registered

Being a first time mom I had no idea what to expect for my baby's first Christmas. Or should I say, I didn't know what kind of gifts to expect people to give my baby. I was never asked what he wanted or needed in the first place. In the end, I never could have dreamt up the loads of shit and toys my son raked in! I learned from this experience that first time parents should get to register for baby's first Christmas and birthday...actually... maybe the first three Birthdays and Christmases for that matter.

Why do people ask me what I want for Christmas, but don't bother asking about my child?  Is it because he cannot truly want anything at 11-months old, or because it is so much more fun to live vicariously through his eyes? I mean after all, at 11-months old all a baby boy could possibly want is building blocks, talking toys and Tonka trucks.

New parents need things more than the babies need toys. Don't get me wrong, I am super grateful for all of the wonderful gifts Oliver received, but I could have used diapers and gift cards, more than the loads of toys. I know, I sound like a complete shit, and that the givers of the gifts deserve to spoil him to their hearts content.  BUT!  I live on a budget, and see so many gifts of toys and toys and more toys as over kill.

I really am grateful, I cannot say that enough, but would it be presumptuous to register for baby's first (second & third) holidays?  Or at the very least, send out a "baby's wish list"? I would have listed a toy or two in addition to diapers and stroller attachments, and certainly a gift card to our favorite baby store would be on that list too. This list would allow both the baby and the parent(s) to get what they really want and need.

Ok, I am trying to put myself in the shoes of the person receiving that list... and I can see how the wish list might take the fun out of toy shopping.  I also think I should probably delete this post and go back to posting my top post of 2012 to save myself from a "you ungrateful bitch" comment or two... but I have not built up my blog on being nice and politically correct... I know there is another mother (or father) out there sitting on a pile of empty toy boxes in a limited space thinking, "Shit! What am I going to do with all of these toys?  I sure wish someone would have bought us diapers instead..."

Of course my big kid thinks the new toys are great!
