Mommy, I love you and everything you do for me but... we need to talk about the crap you are feeding me. |
Look at me, I am a big boy. It's time to talk about my nutritional needs! |

I'm sick of the mushy tasteless baby food. |
![]() |
Seriously, I hate it. I am 9 months old, enough already! The mush stops here. |
![]() |
You see this? I would rather eat my foot! |
Or this Hot Wheel. |
Sorry, but just put the mush in here already. It belongs in there with daddy's poo. |
Look, me and my little friend over here... We are prepared to help you cook. |
ME: How about this? Strawberries, peeled blueberries, chicken & broccoli. Ollie: Now that's what I'm talking about! |
Great talk mom! I knew you would see it my way. Here you go, take this pouch of goo so I can eat. |
Two weeks ago Ollie stopped eating purees, even the chunky purees he would turn his nose up at it. If he couldn't pick it up, he didn't want it. Actually that's not entirely true, he will eat applesauce off of a spoon, but everything else must be 'real' food. I have always let him eat little bits of food, but the Plum Organics pouches were his main sourse of 'solids,' and then one day he refused to eat it. All of the sudden I was scrambling for ideas on healthy meals... three healthy meals a day!
I went online, read my baby books and asked the pediatrician at our well baby check-up about what I should be feeding my 9-monh old.
Online: The most concise list came from Baby Center
What to feed a 9-month old
- Breast milk or formula, PLUS
- Small amounts of soft pasteurized cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese (but no cows' milk until age 1)
- Iron-fortified cereals (rice, barley, wheat, oats, mixed cereals)
- Mashed fruits and vegetables (bananas, peaches, pears, avocados, cooked carrots, squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes)
- Finger foods (lightly toasted bagels, cut up; small pieces of ripe banana; well-cooked spiral pasta; teething crackers; low-sugar O-shaped cereal)
- Small amounts of protein (egg, pureed meats, poultry, and boneless fish; tofu; well-cooked and mashed beans with soft skins like lentils, split peas, pintos, black beans)
How much per day
- 1/4 to 1/3 cup dairy (or 1/2 oz. cheese)
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup iron-fortified cereal
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup fruit
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup vegetables
- 1/8 to 1/4 cup protein foods
Feeding tip
- Introduce new foods one at a time, with at least three days in between to make sure your baby's not allergic.
Books: They say to just feed what I am eating cut up into very small bites. And that rice is great, but will constipate him so not too much.
Pediatrician: He agreed with the Baby Center list, said no Honey, Cow's Milk or Peanut Butter yet. He also said fruity 'O' cereal in some cases is better than plain 'O' cereal. He said the sugar is not as high as we would think, and has more nutrients in it.
Ahhh this raising a baby thing is such a process!

Ooh good post! We encountered the 'Me Do' phase a couple weeks ago, ugh it extends every meal by at least 1/2 an hour!
Isaiah is now an expert at shovelling food into his mouth with his hands, whether it is 'finger' food or puree lol.
Got a question for you (or any of your readers) - how on earth do you stop bubba hoarding food in their cheeks? No matter how small I cut his food up, Isaiah will stuff his mouth with multiple pieces (or 1 big piece if I'm not watching closely enough) and then just suck on the food. I'm super-paranoid about him choking :-S
Ollie us the same way! I keep thinking he is packing food away for winter. I only give him 3/4 prices at a time. And you are right, meal times are almost an hour long sometimes!
I was totally thinking the same thing lately- especially this morning before I read this and Chase was eating almost my entire serving of oatmeal. I realized how much of a bear he's going to be when it comes to weaning, and the more "big people" food I get him hooked on now, the better the weaning will go... Ollie's definitely a big boy- he needs his meat and potatoes! ha :)
This food business is so complicated. Clover just started caring to eat purees, at 8 3/4 months! She still won't eat very much. But she definitely can't eat what we eat cut up. Example: This last week I made jerk chicken and red beans and rice. I did also make chicken and sweet potatoes which she did get.
I can't wait till we are past this transition and she is eating real food all the time, and feeding herself. Right now I'm just excited that she opens her mouth instead of turning her head. Maybe it's a girl thing.
Love your post as usual. Everytime I read it it reminds me when my kids were babies. I really do miss those days sometimes. And because I do love your blog I'm awarding you the Sunshine Award! You can go to my site http://thingsthathappeneverydaytome.blogspot.com/2012/11/i-got-sunshine-award.html and see what its all about. I would love it if you accepted it.
Thank you sooooo much!
The real food all of the time thing gets to be very involved...and messy! Miss Loquacious has a little girl who puts Ollie to shame eating so much. Clover may just be content right now. She will get there.
Love this post! So cute and awesome research done! Will be back <3
Pics with captions are too cute!! It seems your Ollie has always been a few weeks ahead of us so I know what's coming!
Ollie eats healthier than I do! What a cutie :)
Interesting about the fruity o's, who knew!? We definitely went through a big phase of shunning purees and B survived/is surviving on blueberries, frozen peas, pieces of scrambled egg, Cheerios, hummus on pita chip bits, and other odds and ends. Now we are entering the phase where he wants to feed himself with a spoon. It seems like the mess just gets worse and worse!!
William still refuses to eat his food himself! Even cheerios. He will pick it up, and then throw it over the edge, but he will not bring it to his mouth. He will eat most 'real' food if I use my fingers or a spoon. Lazy boy!
He wont even often bring toys to his mouth. Sometimes large toys, but I never worry if he finds a tiny toy or old piece of food :) or anything.
Yet.
Thanks Courtney! xx
OH B it is coming! Stock up now!
Me too! I eat crap while he eats healthy. I was thinking tonight that maybe I need to join him b/c I sure cannot beat him with pizza!
I know! I went out ans splurged on a box of organix fruity 'o's Ollie loves them! I could not agree more with you on how the mess gets worse and worse! I cut open a plastic bag and put it under his chair! I am not looking forward to Oliver feeding himself with a spoon and fork at all!
Don't worry Katie, the day will come. Oliver tried to eat a piece of tape yesterday! Scary. Lil William will be eating everything in site before you know it!
I made all of Lil Misters foods from when we started him on solids! Try www.wholesomebabyfoods.momtastic.com! They have great ideas, recipes, and a lot of information for all ages up through toddler!! Hope it helps! It gave me a TON of creative meal ideas...meals that I could tweak a little and even Hubby Dearest and I ate it so I didnt' have to cook twice!
